Spring Skincare Tips

Aries season is upon us and the weather is warming up, feeling fresh and new! Whether you’re looking to spring clean your skincare routine or need tips on dry skin in spring, you’ve come to the right place. Here are 9 Spring Skincare tips to incorporate into your routine right now!

1. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!
Scrub the dry layers of winter away from your skin! Spring is all about starting fresh. Taking off dead skin will prep your skin to soak up all the good stuff. A mild facial scrub is a great option, however if face masks are more your thing, a deep, pore-cleansing clay mask will do the trick. Another option is to use a tool like an exfoliating brush or exfoliating glove. Make sure to exfoliate gently as over-exfoliation can irritate your skin. If you have dry or sensitive skin and are hesitant to exfoliate, using products with glycolic acid can help remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface without scrubbing.

Use a More Acidic Cleanser

2. Use a More Acidic Cleanser
Cleansers that are more acidic help control sweat and shine during the warmer months. Specifically, cleansers with salicylic acid and retinol are great for unclogging pores on oily or acne-prone skin. Some other showstopper ingredients you can look for in your next cleanser regardless of your skin type are ceramides, vitamin C, alpha-hydroxy acids and glycerin. If you have dry or mature skin, an acidic cleanser may not be for you. In that case, you should look for ingredients like lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, and nourishing oils such as avocado or jojoba in your cleanser.

3. Try a Fruit Acid Peel!
Fruit acid peels can help remove rough patches and dead skin…plus they are a great alternative or complement to exfoliation. Fruit acid peel is commonly known as glycolic acid. Glycolic acid peels are also a mild and holistic alternative to chemical peels. It is extracted from fruits, sugar cane, and even beets. This very mild acid gently exfoliates your skin to remove the top layer of dead skin. Fruit extracts allow skin to naturally produce glycolic and lactic acid, which help to soften skin weathered by winter and sun damage. Glycolic acid peels are also used to treat scars, acne, melisma, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. If you have sensitive skin, first try the peel on a small patch before applying it to your whole face. DON’T over peel- overdoing it can leave your skin raw and vulnerable. DO apply once a week or every two weeks to stay fresh-faced!

4. Lighten Up
trade in your heavy winter creams for a lightweight moisturizer suited for warmer weather. Hotter weather and outdoor activities don’t exactly mesh well with heavy creams. In the warmer months, your skin produces more oil caused by sweat. If you continue using heavy creams in hot, humid weather, you could clog your pores and have more breakouts. ICK! Despite warmer temps and April showers, many skin types still struggle with dry skin in spring, even after the cold months of winter are over…especially if you live in a drier climate. Need something lighter but still ultra-hydrating? You’ll want a moisturizer that allows you to be active without clogging your pores, while hydrating your gorgeous complexion to the max! Make sure you look for these superstar ingredients when looking for your spring/summer moisturizer: hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, ceramides, glycerin and urea. Shed the heavy layers of your winter cream and trade it in for a lightweight lotion!

5. Use a Vitamin C Serum Every Morning
This anti-inflammatory vitamin is the ultimate hydrating and brightening product in your spring skincare routine. Vitamin C is safe for most skin types AND promotes collagen. What else can this little wonder do?! Here’s the scoop: vitamin C is especially important in the warmer months because it increases the potency of your SPF. Not only does vitamin C work to protect your skin from pollution and UV damage, it also aids in fading hyperpigmentation. Need a vitamin C serum to add to your routine but not sure where to start? Our C-Juvenate Super Serum visibly brightens your complexion while eliminating fine lines and wrinkles.

Use a Daily SPF

6. Use a Daily SPF!
(and a daily SPF lip balm) This has to be one of the most important products for spring skincare. As you spend more time outside with the change of seasons, you MUST protect your skin from the sun’s rays. An estimated 90 percent of skin aging is caused by the sun. In fact, people who use a daily SPF of 15 or higher have 24% less skin damage than those who do not use a daily SPF. Even on cloudy days, harmful UVA rays can still cause skin damage.

There are plenty of great lightweight SPF options that won’t feel sticky or too thick. Make sure your lip balm has SPF too - a normal lip balm or lip gloss just won’t cut it! Kick the dry, cracked lips of winter by protecting your lips with a moisturizing SPF lip balm!

7. Clean Your Makeup Brushes!
Yes, that thing you’ve been meaning to do! Spring cleaning is a great time to refresh your routine and make sure your brushes and sponges aren’t holding on to extra bacteria. If your makeup brushes and sponges are overdue for a cleaning, they could be carrying extra dirt and oils, which can cause breakouts. There are many great brush-cleaners and tools out there. If you’re looking for a DIY makeup brush cleaning solution, you can find a variety of different options here. Practice this good habit at least once a month to keep your tools in tip-top shape!

8. Refresh with a Facial Mist
Sure, facial mists feel amazing, but they are even better in the Spring and Summer when you need to cool off. Not only do they feel lovely, but they’re also super hydrating and balance your skin’s PH levels. You can seal in moisture and serums with a couple of spritz-it EVEN doubles as a primer or setting spray for your foundation! Keep one of these in your purse, briefcase, gym bag, etc; it’s the perfect hands-free moisturizer to use on the go!

While it may seem obvious, it is so important for your overall health and complexion to drink plenty of water. Eating fruits and veggies regularly is also important to your outer glow. Water and nourishing vitamins from the food you eat will keep your skin looking bright and plump!
